Parameatal urethral cysts (PUC) are rare in children. Complete surgical excision of the cyst epithelium is the recommended treatment to prevent recurrence in pediatric patients.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Urology
- Congenital Anomalies
- Urethral Pathology
Background:
- Parameatal urethral cyst (PUC) is an uncommon congenital anomaly affecting the pediatric population.
- While approximately 100 cases have been documented, the majority involve the Japanese population.
Observation:
- A 9-year-old boy presented with a distorted urine stream, indicative of a urethral obstruction.
- Clinical examination revealed a parameatal urethral cyst.
Findings:
- The patient underwent successful surgical management.
- Complete excision of the cyst, including its epithelial lining, was performed.
Implications:
- Complete epithelial excision is crucial for preventing cyst recurrence in children.
- This case contributes to the limited literature on parameatal urethral cysts in non-Japanese pediatric patients.

Urethra
The anatomy of the urethra differs between males and females. In females, the urethra is short, measuring about 3–4 cm in length, and opens anterior to the vaginal opening. In males, the urethra is longer and passes through the penis, serving dual purposes: expelling urine and ejaculating semen. The male...
