Summary

Bothrops envenomation (BE) can rarely cause liver hematoma. Physicians should suspect this rare complication in patients with shock or abdominal pain after a snakebite and use ultrasound for diagnosis.

  • A case of a young patient with BE presenting with shock and subcapsular liver hematoma is described.
  • A systematic literature review identified only one prior case of BE associated with liver hematoma.

Findings:

  • The combined analysis includes two cases of BE with liver hematoma, both originating from Brazil.
  • One patient required blood transfusions, but both cases reported a favorable outcome.
  • Liver hematoma represents an infrequent manifestation of Bothrops ophidism.
