Taxonomy01:31

Taxonomy

80.4K
Taxonomy is the science of defining and naming groups of biological organisms based on shared characteristics. It uses a hierarchy of increasingly inclusive categories with Latin names. The smallest units of taxonomy, species and genus, are used to assign a formal, taxonomic name to each species in a system. This classification system, referred to as binomial nomenclature, was formalized by Carolus Linnaeus in the 18th century.

Formation of Species01:31

Formation of Species

43.1K
Speciation describes the formation of one or more new species from one or sometimes multiple original species. The resulting species are discrete from the parent species, and barriers to reproduction will typically exist. There are two primary mechanisms, speciation with and without geographic isolation—allopatric and sympatric speciation, respectively.

Inclusive Fitness00:57

Inclusive Fitness

36.4K
Most altruistic behavior—in which one animal helps another at a cost to themselves—occurs between relatives. Scientists think these altruistic behaviors evolved because they increase the inclusive fitness of the animal providing help.

Mate Choice01:20

Mate Choice

10.8K
Mate choice—the decision about whom to mate with—is a type of natural selection, since animals must reproduce to pass down their genes. Mate choice is also called intersexual selection because the behavior occurs between the sexes.

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

The German tradition views species as individuals, evolving from Naturphilosophie to Darwinian concepts. This perspective emphasizes species as dynamic, time-bound relational systems, a view refined by Bertalanffy and Hennig.

    Area of Science:

    • Philosophy of Science
    • Evolutionary Biology
    • Taxonomy

    Background:

    • The concept of species as individuals originated in German Naturphilosophie, predating Darwin.
    • This tradition views species as dynamic entities, gaining individuality through their temporal existence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To trace the historical development of the species-as-individuals concept.
    • To analyze the philosophical underpinnings and evolutionary implications of this view.

    Main Methods:

    • Historical analysis of philosophical and scientific texts.
    • Conceptual analysis of species individuality and its relation to evolutionary theory.

    Main Results:

    • The German tradition conceptualized species as dynamic, spatiotemporally located relational systems.
    • Evolutionary dynamics created tension, leading some to deny species reality while others linked it to temporal duration.
    • The mature concept defines species as historically conditioned, dynamic, yet stabilized relational systems.

    Conclusions:

    • The species-as-individuals concept, rooted in German Naturphilosophie, evolved and was integrated into evolutionary biology.
    • This perspective highlights the historical, temporal, and relational nature of species.
    • Modern conceptions, like those of Bertalanffy and Hennig, refine this view as a dynamic, stabilized relational system.
