Long COVID is common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, affecting 40% of those previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. This condition, characterized by persistent symptoms, does not appear to worsen IBD activity.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Infectious Diseases
- Public Health
Background:
- Long COVID, persistent symptoms post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, significantly impacts quality of life.
- Individuals with chronic debilitating conditions like inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) may face amplified Long COVID effects.
- Understanding Long COVID prevalence in IBD is crucial for patient management and public health strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the frequency of Long COVID in patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
- To assess the relationship between Long COVID and IBD course, including relapse rates.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 528 IBD patients attending a tertiary referral center was recruited between September and October 2021.
- Patients were evaluated for prior SARS-CoV-2 infection and the subsequent development of Long COVID symptoms.
- Data collected included demographics, clinical characteristics, and IBD activity.
Main Results:
- 10% (53/528) of IBD patients reported a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.
- Among infected IBD patients, 40% (21/53) developed Long COVID, with asthenia being the most common symptom.
- Long COVID was more prevalent in females; however, IBD relapses occurred with similar frequency in patients with and without Long COVID.
Conclusions:
- Long COVID is a frequent occurrence among patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.
- The development of Long COVID does not appear to negatively influence the course or activity of IBD.
- Further research is warranted to explore the specific mechanisms and long-term implications of Long COVID in IBD populations.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by...
Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease III: Diagnostic Studies and Management I-Nutritional Therapy
Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...
