Summary

Shoe size can accurately predict total hip arthroplasty (THA) component sizes, offering a simple method when digital templating is unavailable. This anthropometric approach aids in selecting appropriate implants for uncemented THA.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomechanical engineering
  • Radiographic analysis

Background:

  • Preoperative templating is crucial for total hip arthroplasty (THA) to determine implant size and post-operative biomechanics.
  • Accurate templating is vital for surgical success and medico-legal compliance.
  • While digital methods are common, simple anthropometric models for predicting THA implant sizes are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of using shoe size as a predictor for total hip arthroplasty (THA) component sizes.
  • To compare shoe size-based predictions with traditional digital templating methods.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of digital radiographs from 102 patients undergoing THA.
  • Templating of acetabular cup and femoral stem sizes using TraumaCad software.
  • Correlation analysis between patient shoe size and templated/implanted component sizes.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive correlations were found between shoe size and both templated and implanted cup and stem sizes.
  • Templated and implanted cup sizes showed strong correlation (ρ = 0.76), with 80.4% within 1 size of the template.
  • Femoral stem sizes also correlated well (ρ = 0.69), with 92.6% within 1 size of the template.

Conclusions:

  • A significant positive correlation exists between shoe size and THA component sizes.
  • Easily obtainable anthropometric measurements, like shoe size, can predict uncemented component sizes.
  • Shoe size serves as a practical alternative for implant size prediction in the absence of digital templating.
