Hepatic hemangioma: dynamic bolus CT.

P C Freeny, W M Marks

    AJR. American Journal of Roentgenology
    |October 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Dynamic CT scans for diagnosing hepatic hemangiomas showed limited accuracy. Only 55% of hemangiomas met all three diagnostic criteria, suggesting computed tomography (CT) is a poor imaging technique for this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Medical Imaging
    • Hepatology

    Background:

    • Hepatic hemangiomas are common benign liver tumors.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial to differentiate from malignant lesions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of dynamic bolus computed tomography (CT) for hepatic hemangiomas.
    • To assess the reliability of specific CT criteria in diagnosing hemangiomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 47 patients with 58 hepatic hemangiomas.
    • Dynamic bolus CT protocol including precontrast, rapid-sequence, and delayed scans (up to 60 min).
    • Evaluation of three diagnostic CT criteria: precontrast hypodensity, peripheral enhancement, and delayed isodense fill-in.

    Main Results:

    • Only 32 out of 58 (55%) hepatic hemangiomas met all three proposed CT diagnostic criteria.
    • The established CT criteria demonstrated limited sensitivity for diagnosing hepatic hemangiomas.

    Conclusions:

    • Dynamic bolus CT, using the evaluated criteria, is a relatively poor imaging technique for the specific diagnosis of hepatic hemangiomas.
    • Further research into improved imaging modalities or criteria may be necessary for accurate hemangioma diagnosis.
