    Summary

    Subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy (SAE), also known as Binswanger's disease, is more common than previously thought. Computed tomography (CT) is a reliable tool for diagnosing SAE and its varying degrees.

    Background:

    • Subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy (SAE), or Binswanger's disease, is increasingly recognized.
    • Previous assumptions may have underestimated its prevalence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the frequency of SAE.
    • To evaluate the reliability of computed tomography (CT) for SAE diagnosis.
    • To assess the correlation between SAE and arterial hypertension.

    • Retrospective analysis of 202 autopsied patients over 17 months.
    • Review of antemortem CT scans for 82 patients.
