Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Dural chondrosarcoma is an exceptionally rare intracranial tumor due to the absence of cartilaginous tissue in the meninges.
  • Presents a unique case of primary extraosseous dural chondrosarcoma.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old woman experienced progressive headache, vomiting, vertigo, and gait instability.
  • Imaging revealed a large parietal mass with calcifications and hyperostosis on CT, and a heterogeneous, honey-comb enhancing lesion on MRI.
  • Initial differential diagnoses included meningioma, solitary fibrous tumor-hemangiopericytoma, and dural metastasis.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection confirmed an extra-axial origin.
  • Pathological examination definitively diagnosed a primary dural chondrosarcoma.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the necessity of considering rare pathologies, even with atypical imaging features.
  • Highlights the importance of comprehensive differential diagnosis in neurosurgical oncology.
  • Emphasizes the value of detailed histopathological analysis for accurate tumor classification.
