Summary

Concurrent inguinal hernia (IH) repair with mesh during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is safe and effective. This combined approach showed no complications and is a viable option for patients needing both procedures.

Background:

  • Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a standard treatment for prostate cancer.
  • Inguinal hernias (IH) are common and may require repair.
  • Concurrent surgical procedures can optimize patient care and resource utilization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of performing inguinal hernia (IH) repair with mesh concurrently with transperitoneal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).
  • To assess the safety and applicability of this combined surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 26 patients (31 procedures) who underwent concurrent IH repair and RARP between January 2017 and January 2020.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, intraoperative and postoperative variables.
  • Follow-up assessments included prostate-specific antigen recurrence, IH recurrence, mesh infection, seroma formation, and groin pain.

Main Results:

  • The median patient age was 64.5 years; 46.2% of IHs were detected preoperatively.
  • No perioperative complications related to RARP or IH repair were observed.
  • During a median follow-up of 18 months, no scrotal hematoma, seroma, or mesh infection occurred.

Conclusions:

  • Concurrent inguinal hernia repair during RARP is a safe and applicable procedure.
  • This combined approach offers a viable option for managing both conditions simultaneously.
  • Further research can explore long-term outcomes and patient-reported benefits.
