    Summary

    The Sugiura procedure is a safe and effective surgical treatment for preventing recurrent variceal bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis or portal hypertension. This study shows a low operative risk and high long-term survival rates.

    • The 5-year actuarial survival rate was 81%. Portal vein thrombosis occurred in two patients, leading to one death.
