Existing theories like family communication patterns and terror management theory offer frameworks for this exploration.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how parents of young children (ages 3-6) describe discussing death.
To identify themes in parental explanations of death and analyze associations with communication orientations.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach was employed with 112 parents of young children.
Inductive coding identified four themes in death discussion narratives.
Logistic regression analyzed the link between parental communication orientations and discussion content/frequency.

Main Results:

Parental conversation orientations correlated with the frequency of discussing death.
Conformity orientations were linked to the use of religion and afterlife explanations in death discussions.

Conclusions:

Parental communication styles significantly influence how death is discussed with young children.
Findings highlight the role of conformity and conversation orientations in shaping death education within families.
