Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides01:15

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

4.0K
Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth.  Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds.
As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the...

Main Results:

  • A new lignan, (8S,8'S)-2,2',3,3'-tetramethoxy-4'-hydroxy-epoxylignan-4-O-β-D-glucoside (1), was identified.
  • Eight known compounds (2-9) were also isolated and identified.
  • Compound 1 demonstrated moderate cytotoxicity against HeLa cells with an IC50 value of 19.30 ± 4.46 μM.

Conclusions:

  • The new lignan (1) possesses moderate cytotoxic activity against HeLa cancer cells.
  • This study expands the knowledge of bioactive compounds from *P. tectorius*.
  • Compound 1 warrants further investigation for its potential as an anti-cancer agent.
