Summary

Type 2 diabetes is associated with lower pancreatic blood volume (BV) and mean transit time (MTT). Poorer glycemic control and older age correlate with decreased pancreatic BV.

Background:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex metabolic disorder.
  • Pancreatic function is crucial for glucose homeostasis.
  • Assessing pancreatic perfusion may offer insights into T2DM pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare pancreatic perfusion using computed tomography (CT) in patients with and without type 2 diabetes.
  • To investigate the relationship between pancreatic perfusion parameters and glycemic control.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 17 patients with T2DM and 22 non-diabetic controls.
  • Dynamic 192-slices perfusion CT was used to estimate pancreatic perfusion parameters.
  • Analysis included blood volume (BV) and mean transit time (MTT).

Main Results:

  • Patients with T2DM exhibited significantly lower pancreatic BV and MTT compared to controls.
  • BV was reduced in the pancreatic head, tail, and whole pancreas in T2DM patients.
  • Negative correlations were found between BV and age, as well as fasting plasma glucose.

Conclusions:

  • Pancreatic perfusion, specifically BV and MTT, is significantly impaired in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

  • Perfusion CT may serve as a valuable tool for evaluating pancreatic changes in T2DM.
