Summary

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure causes skin cancer in nude mice. The presence or absence of a thymus did not affect UV carcinogenesis or tumor development in these mice.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a known carcinogen.
  • The role of the thymus in UV carcinogenesis is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the development of skin cancer from UV radiation exposure in C3H- nu/nu nude mice.
  • To determine the influence of a functioning thymus on UV carcinogenesis.

  • UV radiation exposure was administered to C3H- nu/nu nude mice.
  • Tumor incidence and development rates were monitored.
  • Tumorigenicity of developed tumors was assessed via transplantation into normal and immunosuppressed mice.
