Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Oral Medicine

Background:

  • Complete removable dentures are frequently associated with traumatic ulcerations in edentulous patients.
  • These mucosal injuries can significantly impede denture comfort and function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify common sites and frequency of traumatic ulcerations from complete dentures.
  • To determine the number of adjustment visits needed for patient comfort.
  • To analyze factors influencing denture-related mucosal injuries.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty edentulous patients received complete removable dentures.
  • Patients were monitored post-insertion for complaints and mucosal injuries.
  • Descriptive analysis and chi-squared tests were employed.

Main Results:

  • 85.62% of patients required adjustments due to mucosal injuries during the first visit.
  • Mandibular dentures necessitated more post-insertion appointments (average 6) than maxillary dentures (average 4).
  • No significant gender difference in mucosal injury occurrence was observed.

Conclusions:

  • The vestibule is the most frequent site for denture-induced mucosal injuries.
  • Proper denture flange extension during border molding can prevent these injuries.
  • Pressure indicator ink aids in correcting overextended flanges.
