High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) prescription using peak power output (PPO) and lactate threshold (LT) from graded exercise tests (GXTs) is effective in hypoxia. These methods ensure comparable physiological responses to HIIE in both normoxia and hypoxia.
Area of Science:
- Exercise Physiology
- Environmental Physiology
- Sports Science
Background:
- High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) is a potent training modality.
- Prescribing HIIE intensity in hypoxia presents unique physiological challenges compared to normoxia.
- Understanding the efficacy of different prescription methods in hypoxia is crucial for optimizing training.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare HIIE sessions prescribed using maximal (peak power output, PPO) and submaximal (lactate threshold, LT) values derived from graded exercise tests (GXTs).
- To evaluate these prescription methods under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions.
- To determine the physiological responses to HIIE under different environmental conditions and prescription strategies.
Main Methods:
- Ten healthy males completed GXTs in normoxia and normobaric hypoxia to determine PPO and LT.
- Three HIIE sessions were performed: one in hypoxia (HY) and two in normoxia (absolute intensity matched - NA, relative intensity matched - NR).
- Physiological variables including oxygen uptake, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, and blood lactate were measured.
Main Results:
- GXTs in hypoxia showed lower peak oxygen uptake, peak heart rate, PPO, and LT compared to normoxia.
- The normoxic session matched for relative intensity (NR) elicited higher relative heart rate and oxygen uptake compared to the session matched for absolute intensity (NA).
- Hypoxic (HY) and NR sessions resulted in similar physiological strain, while the NA session showed lower relative intensity responses and lower blood lactate accumulation.
Conclusions:
- Prescribing HIIE intensity based on PPO and LT derived from GXTs is feasible and effective in hypoxic conditions.
- Matching relative intensity in normoxia (NR) provides a comparable physiological stimulus to HIIE in hypoxia.
- This approach allows for the safe and effective application of HIIE across different environmental conditions.

Types of Hypoxia
There are four primary types of hypoxia, each resulting from a different cause:
1. Anemic hypoxia: This type occurs due to insufficient oxygen delivery caused by a lack of red blood cells (RBCs) or RBCs with abnormal or...

Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
