Many persons with neurological disorders (PwND) in India face unmet needs, particularly in daily activities and psychological well-being. Addressing these gaps is crucial for improving their quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Public Health
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Significant unmet needs exist for persons with neurological disorders (PwND) upon hospital discharge in India.
- These unmet needs impact various aspects of daily living and overall well-being.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically assess the diverse needs of persons with neurological disorders (PwND) receiving care at a tertiary hospital in Bangalore, India.
- To identify specific areas where patient needs are not being met by existing services.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted.
- Thirty PwND from NIMHANS, Bangalore, were purposively sampled.
- The Camberwell Assessment of Need - Research version (CANE-R) was utilized for data collection.
Main Results:
- A high prevalence (90%) of unmet needs was reported in daytime activities, psychological distress, illness information, and sexual health.
- Majority (70%) experienced unmet needs concerning employment, self-care, medication, mobility, and childcare.
- Significant unmet needs were also observed in accommodation, relationships, and finances (50%).
- Conversely, needs related to food, safety, and social welfare were largely met (75%).
Conclusions:
- Patients with lower socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and those from urban areas, exhibit greater service needs.
- Systematic need assessment is vital for developing targeted interventions to address the unmet needs of PwND.
- Improving care and support systems can enhance the quality of life for individuals with neurological disorders.
