This study found that abstinent individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) exhibit high resilience. Enhancing resilience through social work interventions can support long-term recovery from SUD.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Social Work
Background:
- Understanding resilience is crucial for improving recovery outcomes in individuals with substance use disorder (SUD).
- This study focuses on the resilience levels of individuals who have achieved abstinence from SUD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate and quantify the resilience among abstinent individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder.
- To identify factors associated with resilience in this population.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study design was employed with 60 participants selected consecutively.
- Data were collected via interview schedule from individuals receiving outpatient follow-up services at a de-addiction center.
- Participants aged 18-60 years with at least three months of abstinence were included; statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, and logistic regression.
Main Results:
- The mean age of participants was 39.6 years, with most being married (75%), employed (98%), and diagnosed with alcohol dependence (60%).
- A significant majority (80%) had a history of prior abstinence, and 40% had maintained abstinence for over three months.
- The mean resilience score was 75 (±9.94), indicating a high level of resilience among the abstinent individuals studied.
Conclusions:
- Abstinent individuals with substance use disorder demonstrate high resilience.
- Social work interventions aimed at bolstering resilience can be effective in promoting sustained abstinence and recovery.
