Reduction of intraocular pressure by domperidone

Abstract:
Domperidone, a dopamine antagonist was found to delay the intraocular pressure (IOP) recovery in rabbit eyes after infusion with hypertonic saline and to lower the IOP of normal cat eyes, indicating that domperidone is an ocular hypotensive agent. It did not affect cardiac function significantly but produced potent inhibition of bronchial muscle tone. It improved the blood flow to eye tissues including choroid, ciliary body and retina. These results suggest that domperidone could be used to treat glaucoma without producing cardiovascular disturbances and/or asthmatic attacks.
