Essential tremor commonly affects the tongue, often without the patient

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Movement Disorders

Background:

  • Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder.
  • Tongue tremor is an underrecognized manifestation of ET.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of tongue tremor in patients with essential tremor.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 20 patients diagnosed with essential tremor.
  • Clinical assessment of tremor in various body parts, including the tongue.
  • Evaluation of voice disturbances and dysarthria.
  • Assessment of tremor frequency and response to ethanol and medications.

Main Results:

  • Tongue tremor was present in 20 patients with essential tremor.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Most patients were unaware of their tongue tremor.
  • Hand tremor was observed in 16 patients.
  • Tongue tremor frequency (4-8 Hz) matched hand tremor frequency.
  • Ethanol infusion and medications (propranolol, primidone, clonazepam) suppressed tongue tremor.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tongue tremor is a frequent, often asymptomatic, finding in essential tremor.
    • It shares characteristics with limb tremor and responds to standard ET treatments.
