Language and Cognition01:27

Language and Cognition

499
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

296
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Language Development01:22

Language Development

507
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Health Literacy

4.4K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Components of Language01:24

Components of Language

499
Language, whether spoken, signed, or written, consists of specific components: lexicon and grammar. The lexicon is the vocabulary of a language, comprising its words. Grammar is the set of rules used to convey meaning through the lexicon. For example, English grammar adds “-ed” to most verbs to indicate past tense. Words are formed by combining phonemes, which are the basic sound units of a language. Different languages have different sets of phonemes (e.g., “ah” vs.

Barriers to Effective Communication II

3.9K
The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...

Summary

The EMBRACE reading comprehension intervention showed promise for dual language learners (DLLs) with low initial English reading skills, especially with narrative texts. Students with lower decoding and comprehension abilities benefited most from this iPad-based program.

Area of Science:

  • Education
  • Psychology
  • Linguistics

Background:

  • Dual language learners (DLLs) often face challenges with English reading comprehension.
  • A significant portion of DLLs also experience developmental language disorders, further complicating reading acquisition.
  • Effective interventions are crucial to support these students' academic success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the EMBRACE (Enhanced Moved by Reading to Accelerate Comprehension in English) intervention for DLLs with reading difficulties.
  • To identify student characteristics that predict greater benefit from the intervention.
  • To assess the intervention's impact on reading comprehension using various measures.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-six second- to fifth-grade DLLs were randomly assigned to an intervention or control group.
  • The intervention involved using an iPad to manipulate images for understanding multichapter stories.
  • Comprehension was assessed using intervention texts, transfer texts, and standardized reading tests.

Main Results:

  • The EMBRACE intervention did not yield statistically significant overall effects for the studied DLLs.
  • The intervention was more effective for narrative texts compared to expository texts.
  • Students with lower baseline English decoding and comprehension skills showed greater improvement.

Conclusions:

  • The EMBRACE intervention demonstrates potential for DLLs with low initial reading skills in early elementary grades.
  • Matching text difficulty to student abilities is key for maximizing the benefits of comprehension strategy instruction.
  • Further research can refine the application of this intervention for diverse learners.
