Background:

  • Competency-based training is transforming oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the literature on the scope of computerized simulation in OMS teaching.
  • To identify the applications and limitations of current simulation technologies in OMS training.

  • A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted.
  • A PubMed search identified 35 articles published between 2010 and 2021 on computerized simulation for maxillofacial procedures.
  • Two independent reviewers analyzed the selected literature.

Main Results:

  • Computerized simulation has been applied to various OMS procedures, including minor oral surgery, orthognathic surgery, trauma, cleft lip/palate repair, nerve blocks, endoscopic procedures, reconstructive surgery, and intubation.
  • Ten randomized controlled trials were found, but significant heterogeneity existed among the studies.
  • The reviewed literature highlights the potential of simulator training for skill acquisition under expert mentorship.

Conclusions:

  • Computerized simulation offers a promising avenue for enhancing OMS resident training.
  • Further rigorous studies are required to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation in knowledge acquisition and skill development within OMS programs.
  • Holistic resident training can be achieved through expert-mentored simulator-based skill acquisition.
