Background:

  • Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic bacterial disease caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, prevalent in small ruminant populations globally.
  • Effective management strategies are crucial for controlling CLA outbreaks and preventing economic losses in livestock.

Observation:

  • An outbreak of CLA occurred in a herd of sheep and goats at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, in the summer of 2019.
  • Synergistic hemolysis inhibition tests and physical screening identified infected animals.

Findings:

  • Animals with high antibody titers (≥1:64) or CLA lesions were isolated and culled, totaling 33 sheep and 4 goats.
  • Female sheep and male goats exhibited higher susceptibility and were culled at significantly greater rates compared to their male and female counterparts, respectively.

Implications:

  • Implementing prompt isolation, culling, and subsequent vaccination protocols can effectively control CLA outbreaks.
  • The successful management strategy resulted in zero recurrence of CLA through August 2021, demonstrating the efficacy of the applied interventions.
