Aerobic exercise may improve neurocognitive function in people living with HIV and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). This randomized controlled trial will assess the impact of a 12-week exercise program on HAND symptoms and related outcomes in Nigeria.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Public Health
- Exercise Science
Background:
- Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced HIV-associated dementia but not less severe HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND).
- People living with HIV on ART may still experience limiting HAND symptoms.
- Aerobic exercise is being investigated as a potential intervention for HAND.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise program on HAND in Southeastern Nigeria.
- To evaluate neurocognitive performance, HAND prevalence, viral load, and CD4 count in participants.
- To assess secondary outcomes including quality of life and activity limitations.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving at least 68 patients diagnosed with HAND.
- Participants assigned to either an aerobic exercise group (stationary bicycle ergometer, 3x/week, 12 weeks) or a control group.
- Primary outcomes: neurocognitive performance, HAND prevalence, viral load, CD4 count. Secondary outcomes: quality of life, activity/social participation.
Main Results:
- Data curation is ongoing; analysis is pending.
- Study outcomes are expected to be published in March 2022.
- This is a protocol for an ongoing study.
Conclusions:
- A 12-week aerobic exercise program is being evaluated for its effect on HAND in Southeastern Nigeria.
- The study protocol is registered and approved.
- Further results will be published upon completion of data analysis.

Exercise Stress Test
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.
Purposes
Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
