    Summary

    Electrothermal removal of brackets (ETD) is a safe dental procedure. This study found ETD generates low heat and causes no significant pulp damage, making it a viable alternative to traditional bracket removal methods.

    Background:

    • Conventional bracket removal can cause iatrogenic damage to tooth structure.
    • There is a need for minimally invasive and effective bracket removal techniques.
    • Electrothermal removal of brackets (ETD) has been proposed as an alternative method.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the temperature changes at the pulpal wall during electrothermal removal of brackets (ETD).
    • To histologically assess the pulpal response to ETD.
    • To determine the physiological acceptability of ETD compared to conventional methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Part I: Measured pulpal wall temperature during ETD on human teeth.
    • Part II: Examined histologic features of dental pulp following ETD.
    • Compared ETD temperature to established primate safety thresholds.

    Main Results:

    • Temperatures generated at the pulpal wall during ETD were significantly below the primate threshold.
    • Histologic examination revealed minor cellular modifications related to forceps placement, not ETD.
    • No evidence of cellular pathosis or ETD-induced pulpal damage was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Electrothermal removal of brackets (ETD) generates temperatures well within safe limits for human pulpal tissue.
    • ETD does not cause significant histological damage to the dental pulp.
    • ETD presents a physiologically acceptable and safe alternative to conventional bracket removal techniques in orthodontics.
