Summary

Linitis plastica (LP) significantly worsens survival in gastric adenocarcinoma patients undergoing gastrectomy. This condition is an independent risk factor for mortality, highlighting its poor prognostic implication.

Background:

Linitis plastica (LP) is a distinct pattern of gastric adenocarcinoma.
The prognostic significance of LP has remained unclear despite its long history.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the impact of Linitis plastica on the survival outcomes of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent gastrectomy.

Main Methods:

A retrospective, single-center study analyzed cases of LP diagnosed via pathological anatomy over five years.
Comparative analysis included 199 gastrectomies, grouping patients into Linitis plastica (LP), diffuse non-LP carcinomas (DNLP), and other adenocarcinomas (ADC).

Main Results:

Linitis plastica patients had significantly lower median survival (14 months) compared to DNLP (51.5 months) and other adenocarcinomas (62 months).
Overall survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were statistically worse for LP patients.
Multivariate analysis identified LP as an independent risk factor for overall survival (HR: 3.26, p=0.001).

Conclusions:

Linitis plastica is an independent prognostic factor in gastric cancer.
LP is associated with significantly higher mortality rates in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.
