Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

1.8K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Para Athletics
  • Injury Prevention

Background:

  • Para swimming participation is rising, yet research on injuries and prevention lags behind able-bodied swimming.
  • There is a need to understand injury patterns and prevention strategies specific to Para swimmers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To collect data on common injuries in Para swimmers.
  • To investigate current injury prevention programs and attitudes toward injury.
  • To identify factors influencing injury risk and prevention in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, mixed-methods design was employed.
  • Online surveys were distributed to elite Para swimmers on U.S. Paralympics National teams.
  • Qualitative interviews were conducted with six national team Para swimmers.

Main Results:

  • Over half of surveyed Para swimmers (52.4%) reported training-altering injuries.
  • While strength training and stretching were common, specific injury prevention programs were utilized by only 28.6%.
  • Interviews highlighted the impact of compensatory body mechanics and the need for individualized prevention and knowledgeable support staff.

Conclusions:

  • Injury prevention programs are vital but underutilized in Para swimming.
  • Programs must be individualized to address specific biomechanics and impairments.
  • Enhancing coaching knowledge and access to tailored programs can decrease injury rates in Para swimmers.
