Background:

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide.
Current treatments like escitalopram have limitations.
Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound, is being investigated for its therapeutic potential.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the efficacy of psilocybin with psychotherapy against escitalopram with psychotherapy for treating depression.
To discuss the implications of these findings for clinical practice and future research.

Main Methods:

A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted.
Participants received either psilocybin or escitalopram, both in conjunction with psychotherapy.

Main Results:

Psilocybin demonstrated an antidepressant effect comparable to escitalopram.
The study was a phase II trial, with phase III trials still pending.

Conclusions:

Psilocybin shows promise as a potential treatment for depression.
