    Summary

Percutaneous renal biopsy is crucial for diagnosing kidney diseases. While perirenal hematomas are common, most cases do not require surgical intervention, minimizing patient risk.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Radiology
    • Urology

    Context:

    • Histological diagnosis is vital for managing renal diseases.
    • Percutaneous renal biopsy is a key diagnostic tool.
    • Hemorrhage is the most frequent complication of renal biopsy.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the incidence of perirenal hematomas after percutaneous renal biopsy.
    • To assess the clinical significance and management of these hematomas.

    Summary:

    • A study of 207 percutaneous renal biopsies in 168 patients identified 64 perirenal hematomas (30.9%).
    • Only 2 hematomas (0.96%) necessitated surgical intervention.
    • Four patients (1.9%) experienced transient gross hematuria with bladder outlet obstruction, managed via cystoscopy.

    Impact:

    • Sonography effectively detects perirenal hematomas.
    • Percutaneous renal biopsy is generally safe, with a low rate of severe complications.
    • Findings support the continued use of renal biopsy in patient management.
