Summary
A rare skin reaction, acantholytic dyskeratosis, occurred after the Moderna COVID vaccine. This condition mimicked Grover disease, possibly triggered by the vaccine in a patient with a history of the condition.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Vaccinology
- Pathology
Background:
- Cutaneous side effects of COVID-19 vaccines are being increasingly documented.
- Acantholytic dyskeratosis is a rare histopathological finding.
- Grover disease (transient acantholytic dermatosis) is a benign skin condition.
Observation:
- An eruptive, erythematous, vesiculopapular rash developed post-Moderna COVID-19 vaccination.
- The patient had a prior history of Grover disease, which was in remission.
- Histopathology revealed patchy suprabasal acantholysis with dyskeratotic keratinocytes.
Findings:
- Histopathological findings mimicked Grover disease.
- Direct immunofluorescence was negative.
- The rash onset was temporally associated with vaccine administration.
Implications:
- This case highlights a rare potential cutaneous adverse event following mRNA vaccination.
- The Moderna vaccine may trigger or unmask Grover disease in susceptible individuals.
- Further research is needed to understand vaccine-associated dermatoses and their management.

Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.

Skin Cancer
4.8K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.

Allergic Drug Reactions
1.0K
Allergic reactions related to drugs are hypersensitivity responses driven by the immune system and bear no connection to the drug's therapeutic action. While drugs in isolation do not trigger an immune response, they can interact with endogenous proteins to form antigens. These antigens stimulate lymphocytes to produce antibodies. IgE-type antibodies attach themselves to mast cells. Upon subsequent exposure to the same stimulus, the antigen-antibody interaction is initiated, unleashing...

Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.

Cancer Vaccines

Cancer treatment vaccines are a rapidly evolving field that offers a promising approach to immunotherapy. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, cancer treatment vaccines are designed to treat existing cancers by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer vaccines come in two categories: preventive (prophylactic) and treatment (active). Preventive vaccines, such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, protect against viruses that cause certain...
