Classification of Illness01:17

Classification of Illness

8.1K
The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries.
An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic.
Acute illness is severe...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-IV: Assessement and Diagnostic Studies

2.6K
Assessing and diagnosing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a detailed approach that includes a comprehensive review of medical history, physical examination, and a variety of diagnostic tests. This thorough evaluation is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis and guide effective management strategies.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-III: Symptoms and Complications.

3.0K
Understanding the variety of primary symptoms and systemic complications that characterize chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is crucial for healthcare professionals.
Symptoms of COPD can be classified as primary or systemic. Primary symptoms relate to reduced airflow, while systemic or extrapulmonary symptoms relate to COPD's broader impact on the body.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-V: Management

2.7K
Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a multifaceted approach to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, improve overall health status, and slow disease progression. Key strategies include lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, supportive therapies, and, in some cases, surgery. Here is an overview of the primary COPD management strategies:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

1.5K
COPD is defined as a heterogeneous lung condition marked by persistent respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, cough, and sputum production, caused by abnormalities in the airways that cause airflow obstruction.
Smoking is a primary risk factor for COPD, with over 80% of patients having a history of it. Patients typically experience progressive dyspnea or labored breathing, frequent coughing, and recurrent pulmonary infections. Many eventually succumb to respiratory failure, characterized by...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndromes
  • Post-COVID Conditions

Background:

  • A dedicated post-COVID-19 myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) program was established in response to emerging long-term symptoms.
  • The program aimed to address fatigue and functional impairments following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Observation:

  • 39 patients with post-COVID-19 ME symptoms participated in the program.
  • The 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12) was administered at baseline and one month post-treatment.

Findings:

  • Twelve participants (31%) completed both surveys, demonstrating a 5-point improvement in SF-12 physical component summary scores.
  • Mental component summary scores also improved by 4 points on the SF-12.
  • Case studies highlighted a standardized treatment approach for "long hauler" patients.

Implications:

  • Process improvement data indicate positive changes in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for program participants.
  • Further practice-based clinical trials are recommended to optimize treatment strategies for post-COVID-19 ME.
  • This research contributes to understanding and managing chronic conditions following viral infections.
