Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease.
  • Thyroid involvement is frequently overlooked in SSc patients.
  • Thyroid dysfunction is a known complication, but its association with thyroid volume is understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate thyroid volume in patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc).
  • To investigate the relationship between thyroid volume and clinical/laboratory parameters in SSc.
  • To identify factors associated with thyroid atrophy in SSc.

Main Methods:

  • Single-center, cross-sectional study of 86 SSc patients.
  • Thyroid volume assessed via ultrasonography by a radiologist.
  • Clinical data included modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) and Medsger severity score (MSS).

Main Results:

  • Thyroid atrophy was observed in 53.5% of SSc patients.
  • A significant negative correlation was found between thyroid volume and mRSS, MSS, and disease duration.
  • mRSS and disease duration were identified as risk factors for thyroid atrophy.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid atrophy, not just autoantibodies, is a primary cause of thyroid dysfunction in SSc.
  • Thyroid atrophy is more prevalent in SSc patients with interstitial lung disease.
  • Thyroid dysfunction and volume reduction correlate with increased SSc duration and severity.
