    Summary

Glaucoma, known since Antiquity, was linked to increased intraocular pressure by Banister. Early diagnostic tools and treatments like iridectomy and pilocarpine advanced glaucoma management.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Medical History

    Background:

    • Glaucoma, a condition causing blindness, has been recognized since ancient times.
    • Early descriptions by Hippocrates noted its association with aging.

    Observation:

    • Banister first connected elevated intraocular pressure to glaucoma.
    • Von Helmholtz's ophthalmoscope (1850) enabled visualization of fundus changes.
    • Donders identified high intraocular pressure as a cause of blindness in 1862, naming it Glaukoma simplex.

    Findings:

    • Advancements in glaucoma diagnosis were driven by the invention of the tonometer and perimeter.
    • The use of cocaine also improved diagnostic capabilities.
    • The first effective surgical intervention, iridectomy, was performed by von Graefe in 1856.

    Implications:

    • The discovery of pilocarpine in 1875 marked the beginning of pharmacological treatment for glaucoma.
    • These historical developments laid the foundation for modern glaucoma diagnosis and treatment strategies.
