Background:

Simulation-based learning (SBL) provides a risk-free environment for nursing education.
SBL is a viable alternative to traditional clinical training, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This study evaluates SBL's effectiveness as a substitute for clinical experience from student perspectives.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the effectiveness of simulation-based learning as a complete substitute for clinical experience in nursing education.
To investigate nursing students' perceptions of SBL's impact on their clinical competencies.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted across four nursing colleges in Saudi Arabia.
Data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire, the Modified Simulation Effectiveness Tool (SET-M).
Participants included nursing students who had attended simulation sessions.

Main Results:

Significant differences in perceptions of SBL effectiveness were found based on sex and university (p ≤ 0.001).
A significant difference was observed in agreement levels for pre-briefing, scenario, and debriefing domains (p < 0.001).
Third and fourth-year students constituted the majority of participants.

Conclusions:

Simulation-based learning is a valuable strategy for enhancing nursing students' self-awareness, confidence, and clinical performance.
Gender influences perceptions of simulation effectiveness, with female students reporting more positive experiences.
SBL contributes to improved efficiency in performing clinical procedures.
