Follicular large cell lymphoma. An immunophenotype study.

C F Garcia, R A Warnke, L M Weiss

    The American Journal of Pathology
    |June 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Follicular large cell lymphoma shares immunologic markers with both diffuse large cell lymphoma and low-grade follicular lymphomas. This finding aids in classifying these B-cell lymphomas and understanding their origins.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Oncology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Follicular large cell lymphoma (FLCL) is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
    • Understanding the immunophenotype of FLCL is crucial for accurate diagnosis and classification.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunologic profile of follicular large cell lymphoma.
    • To compare the immunophenotype of FLCL with diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL) and low-grade follicular lymphoma (FL).

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized monoclonal antibodies on frozen tissue sections from 17 FLCL cases.
    • Assessed expression of B-cell markers (T015, B1, 4G7, CALLA), immunoglobulin, HLA-DR, Tac, B2, T05, and Ki-67.
    • Identified dendritic cell populations and host T-cell infiltrates.

    Main Results:

    • 65% of FLCL cases showed immunoglobulin expression, lower than low-grade FL but similar to DLCL.
    • All cases expressed B-lineage markers (T015, B1, 4G7, HLA-DR) and CALLA (except one).
    • Variable expression of Tac, B2, T05, and Ki-67 was observed; a distinct dendritic cell population and T-cell infiltrate were present.

    Conclusions:

    • FLCL exhibits immunologic characteristics overlapping with both DLCL and low-grade FL.
    • These findings highlight FLCL's intermediate immunophenotype.
    • The study contributes to the differential diagnosis and understanding of lymphoma pathogenesis.
