Kidney transplants may normalize spatial attention bias in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Hemodialysis patients showed increased leftward spatial bias, which normalized after successful kidney transplantation, similar to healthy controls.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Nephrology
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Healthy individuals exhibit pseudoneglect, a leftward spatial attentional bias.
- Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis often show an exaggerated leftward spatial attentional bias.
- While kidney transplantation improves cognitive function in ESRD patients, its effect on spatial attention bias is unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of kidney transplantation on the heightened leftward spatial attentional bias observed in hemodialysis patients with ESRD.
Main Methods:
- The line bisection test was used to assess spatial bias.
- Participants included hemodialyzed ESRD patients, kidney transplant recipients with ESRD, and healthy controls (HC).
Main Results:
- All groups displayed a leftward spatial bias.
- Hemodialyzed ESRD patients exhibited a significantly greater leftward bias compared to HC.
- No significant difference in spatial bias was found between kidney transplant recipients and HC.
Conclusions:
- Successful kidney transplantation appears to normalize the abnormal leftward spatial attention allocation in ESRD patients.
- Further research is necessary to elucidate the mechanisms underlying spatial attentional bias in hemodialysis and its normalization post-transplantation.
