- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Dendrobium terminale is a plant species known for its potential medicinal properties.
- Phenanthrene derivatives are a class of natural products with diverse biological activities.
- Investigating new compounds from traditional medicinal plants can lead to novel therapeutic agents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel dihydrophenanthrene derivatives from Dendrobium terminale.
- To evaluate the cytotoxic and antitumor effects of isolated compounds against various cancer cell lines.
- To analyze the structure-activity relationships of these phenanthrene derivatives.
Main Methods:
- Isolation and purification of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation of new compounds via detailed spectroscopic analysis (NMR, MS).
- Cytotoxicity assays against human tumor cell lines (sw1990, HCT-116, HepG2).
Main Results:
- Two new dihydrophenanthrene derivatives (compounds 1 and 2) were identified.
- Twelve known phenanthrene analogues were also isolated and characterized.
- Compounds 11 and 14 exhibited notable cytotoxic effects against tested cancer cell lines.
- Revised NMR data for known compounds 7 and 9 using 2D NMR.
Conclusions:
- Dendrobium terminale is a source of structurally diverse dihydrophenanthrene derivatives.
- Compounds 11 and 14 demonstrate promising antitumor potential, warranting further investigation.
- The study contributes to understanding the chemical constituents of Dendrobium terminale and their pharmacological activities.

Conformation
The simplest example of a diene is 1,3-butadiene, an acyclic conjugated π system. At room temperature, the molecule exists as a mixture of s-cis and s-trans conformers by virtue of rotation around the carbon–carbon single bond. Although the s-trans isomer is...
