Summary

Cimetidine treatment may decrease erythrocyte protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) levels in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), potentially reducing photosensitivity. Most patients reported improved symptoms and tolerated the treatment well.

  • Cimetidine's potential role in inhibiting heme biosynthesis via δ-aminolevulinic acid synthase was investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of cimetidine in treating EPP patients.
  • To assess the impact of cimetidine on erythrocyte PpIX levels and photosensitivity.

  • A systematic literature review identified EPP patients treated with cimetidine.
  • Prospective treatment of 18 EPP outpatients with oral cimetidine over 4 months.
