Area of Science:

  • Environmental acoustics
  • Transportation engineering
  • Machine learning applications

Background:

  • Road traffic noise poses a significant environmental and health challenge.
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are emerging as smart traffic control solutions.
  • The potential of ITS for noise mitigation remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate an ITS-integrated system for road traffic noise assessment.
  • To assess the acoustic efficacy of an ITS installation in reducing noise exposure.
  • To provide updated data for noise maps and action plans using ITS.

Main Methods:

  • Developed low-cost camera instrumentation for vehicle recognition and counting.
  • Utilized machine learning techniques compliant with CNOSSOS-EU noise assessment model.
  • Evaluated acoustic impact by comparing noise exposure (Gden, Gnight) before and after ITS implementation.

Main Results:

  • The developed instrumentation and methodology successfully integrated with an existing ITS.
  • Demonstrated a reduction in acoustic impact on the population post-ITS installation.
  • Quantified the decrease in highly annoyed and sleep-disturbed citizens.

Conclusions:

  • ITS, when integrated with noise mapping tools, offers a viable solution for traffic noise mitigation.
  • The system provides a method for continuous data collection for noise action plans.
  • ITS can complement targeted noise reduction strategies like low-emission asphalt.
