Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data01:25

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

586
Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

102
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Tobacco Control

Background:

  • Hookah Tobacco Smoking (HTS) cessation is challenging, particularly among women.
  • A theory-based, systematic intervention was developed to address HTS in Bandar Abbas, Iran.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-based intervention on HTS cessation in women.
  • To assess the impact of the Intervention Mapping approach on HTS determinants and behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design using the Intervention Mapping approach.
  • 212 women were enrolled in control and intervention groups, with the intervention group receiving a 4-month educational course.
  • Data collected at baseline, end of intervention, and 3- and 6-month follow-ups.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group showed significant improvements in knowledge, attitude, social norms, self-efficacy, habit, and intention related to HTS.
  • HTS abstinence rates were substantially higher in the intervention group (61.3% at end, 45.5% at 6 months) compared to the control group (16% at end, 10% at 6 months).

Conclusions:

  • Intervention Mapping (IM) is a powerful, theory-based method for HTS cessation.
  • The IM approach demonstrated significant success in reducing HTS and increasing abstinence in women.
  • Further testing of the IM method in diverse settings is recommended.
