Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

12.5K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

3.0K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

66
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

89
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Types of Toxins01:36

Types of Toxins

2.1K
Humans continually engage with an environment rich in potentially harmful chemicals. These are introduced to our bodies through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. These chemicals exist in various forms, such as air and environmental pollutants, agricultural chemicals, organic solvents, and heavy metals.
Air pollutants, primarily gases, pose significant threats to respiratory health, leading to conditions like hypoxia, lung cancer, and in extreme cases, death.
Environmental pollutants like...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

186
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Body piercing involves inserting jewelry through created openings in various body areas.
  • Its prevalence has significantly increased in recent decades across the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the literature on body piercing complications.
  • To enhance awareness regarding potential health risks associated with body piercings.
  • To inform the development of effective prevention strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review was conducted adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.
  • Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to April 2020.
  • Included studies reported proven associations between piercings and health risks, with quality assessment.

Main Results:

  • Out of 4748 initial studies, 84 articles were included in the review.
  • Microbiological complications included local and distant infections (e.g., mastitis, endocarditis, hepatitis, HIV, brain abscess, toxic shock syndrome).
  • Other reported complications encompassed bleeding, gingival recession, dental injuries, various dermatitis types, keloids, fibromas, and basal cell carcinoma.

Conclusions:

  • Health authorities should launch educational campaigns to inform the public about piercing-related health risks.
  • Professional training for piercers varies globally and often lacks comprehensive awareness of adverse effects.
  • Periodic educational upgrades for piercers are recommended to improve safety standards.
