Summary

Dermatodaxia, or skin biting, is a body-focused repetitive behavior. This condition often presents as a solitary, lichenified nodule on the fingers or hands, and individuals may not seek treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Dermatodaxia, previously termed dermatophagia, is a body-focused repetitive behavior.
  • It is classified under obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
  • Concurrent disorders may include skin picking, hair pulling, and nail biting.

Observation:

  • A case report details a man with dermatodaxia on his left index finger.
  • The lesion presented as an asymptomatic, lichenified nodule with hyperkeratosis.
  • The patient was aware his skin biting caused the lesion and declined intervention.

Findings:

  • Dermatodaxia lesions are typically unilateral, solitary, asymptomatic, lichenified nodules.
  • Common sites include forearms, hands, and fingers.
  • Bilateral or multiple lesions can occur.

Implications:

  • Management may involve physical, behavioral, or pharmacologic interventions.
  • Many individuals with dermatodaxia are aware of their behavior but do not seek treatment.
  • Understanding patient awareness and treatment reluctance is crucial for managing this condition.
