Background:

  • Open simple prostatectomy (OSP) was the traditional treatment for enlarged prostate glands.
  • Minimally invasive techniques like robotic-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) and laparoscopic simple prostatectomy (LSP) have emerged.
  • RASP and LSP aim to improve outcomes for benign prostatic hyperplasia management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare intraoperative and perioperative outcomes of RASP versus LSP.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of these minimally invasive approaches.
  • To provide data for surgical decision-making in prostate surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 25 RASP and 25 LSP cases from March 2015 to December 2020.
  • Data included patient demographics, prostate volume, operative time, symptom scores (IPSS), and complications.
  • Transvesical approach was used for both RASP and LSP procedures.

  • No significant differences in baseline characteristics, BMI, prostate volume, or IPSS between RASP and LSP.

Conclusions:

  • RASP is a safe and effective technique for simple prostatectomy.
  • RASP offers the advantage of a shorter hospitalization compared to LSP.
  • LSP is a viable and safe alternative for experienced surgeons, especially considering cost and availability.
