Abstract:
The main responsibility of stomata is controlling the exchange of water and carbon dioxide between plants and the surrounding air. Stomata open or close accordingly to environmental conditions. For example, stomata are closed in the dark but gradually open as light levels increase. New aspects of stomata functioning are still surfacing enabling a better representation of the relationship between vegetation and the atmosphere, which is of great importance for global change research. photo credit: João M.
