Summary

Video-based Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (V-QBA) shows broad agreement with live assessments for cattle welfare. However, V-QBA results for mood were lower, suggesting caution when using this method alone.

Background:

  • Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (QBA) systematically scores behaviour using specific terms to evaluate welfare.
  • Video-based QBA (V-QBA) is increasingly used but requires validation against live assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate video-based Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (V-QBA) against live QBA in housed beef cattle.
  • To compare correlations and differences between live QBA and V-QBA scores.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted 40 live QBAs on beef cattle with two assessors.
  • Recorded video during live assessments for subsequent V-QBA.
  • Compared live and video scores using correlation, significance testing, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA).

Main Results:

  • 12 of 17 behaviour terms correlated significantly between live QBA and V-QBA.
  • A significant difference was found for the term "Bored", with V-QBA yielding lower scores.
  • Both live QBA and V-QBA correlated across PC1 (arousal) and PC2 (mood), with no significant difference for PC1 but a significant difference for PC2.

Conclusions:

  • Broad agreement exists between live QBA and V-QBA at univariate and multivariate levels.
  • Caution is advised for V-QBA implementation due to lack of absolute agreement and muted PC2 (mood) scores.
  • Further validation across diverse animals, environments, and assessors is recommended before independent V-QBA use.
