Summary

Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is feasible for same-day discharge (SDD) in selected patients with small renal tumors. This approach is safe, with low complication rates and high patient satisfaction.

Background:

  • Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is a minimally invasive technique for small renal tumors.
  • Assessing the feasibility and safety of same-day discharge (SDD) after RAPN is crucial for optimizing patient care and resource utilization.

Observation:

  • A monocentric study evaluated 20 patients with small renal tumors (cT1a, RENAL score <6) undergoing RAPN as the first case of the day.
  • Patients with good performance status and no contraindications for outpatient surgery were included.
  • Anesthesia protocols facilitated rapid recovery, enabling same-day discharge.

Findings:

  • All patients were discharged on the same day after a median of 350 minutes.
  • One intraoperative complication (Grade 1) and two early readmissions (within 30 days) occurred (one Clavien I, one Clavien IIIa).
  • The 90-day SDD failure rate was 10%, with 85% patient satisfaction.

Implications:

  • RAPN can be safely performed as a same-day discharge procedure for carefully selected patients with small renal tumors.
  • SDD after RAPN demonstrates potential for efficient healthcare delivery without compromising patient safety or satisfaction.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to refine patient selection criteria and protocols for SDD after RAPN.
