Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Palliative Care Research
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Metastatic cancer patients experience significant symptom burden, necessitating specialized care.
  • Palliative care integration is recommended to improve quality of life and reduce costs.
  • Factors influencing palliative care use, particularly patient-level predictors, require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify patient-level predictors associated with inpatient palliative care utilization among individuals with metastatic cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of the 2018 New Jersey State Inpatient Database.
  • Inclusion of hospitalized adult patients diagnosed with metastatic cancer.
  • Generalized linear modeling to assess the impact of pain and depression on palliative care use.

Main Results:

  • 15.4% of 28,697 hospitalizations for metastatic cancer included a palliative care consultation.
  • Pain was a significant predictor of palliative care use; depression was not.
  • Age, income category, and insurance status were significant demographic predictors of palliative care utilization.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding demographic and clinical variables is crucial for improving palliative care access for metastatic cancer patients.
  • Enhanced screening for pain and depression may increase palliative care consultations for inpatients with metastatic cancer.
