Relationship Between Mental Health and Protective Health Behaviors in Adolescents: A Secondary Data Analysis
Purpose:
Evidence highlights rising mental health concerns among youth. This study investigated the relationship between protective behaviors, including physical activity, regular breakfast, sleep, and parental monitoring, and adolescent mental health.
Methods:
Using the 2023 youth risk behavior surveillance system (YRBSS) dataset (N = 20,103, ages 12-18+), bivariate and logistic regression analyses examined the associations between mental health, protective behaviors, and parental monitoring.
Results:
One quarter (28.5%) of participants reported poor mental health most or all the time. While most ate breakfast regularly (82.1%) and experienced parental monitoring (84%), fewer engaged in regular physical activity (46.3%) or got adequate sleep (23.2%). Better mental health was significantly associated with breakfast, physical activity, and sleep, whereas parental monitoring was not significantly associated with mental health. Additionally, parental monitoring did not significantly moderate these associations.
Discussion:
The findings highlight that physical activity, breakfast, and sleep support adolescent mental health. These insights can guide interventions and future research on cultural and socioeconomic influences.
