Degloving perineal injuries require prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical intervention. A multidisciplinary team approach ensures good functional outcomes for these complex cases.
Area of Science:
- Trauma Surgery
- Surgical Management
- Reconstructive Surgery
Background:
- Degloving perineal injury involves avulsion of skin and subcutaneous tissue.
- High morbidity and mortality risk if mismanaged.
- Often caused by road vehicle accidents or falls.
Purpose of the Study:
- Evaluate management protocol for degloving perineal injury.
- Assess clinical outcomes in a case series.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of six cases (2018-2020).
- Included isolated scrotal degloving and complex perineal injuries with pelvic/anorectal/urethral trauma.
- Two cases required pelvic stabilization for open-book fractures.
Main Results:
- Management involved resuscitation, pelvic packing, debridement, and primary repair.
- Specialized teams performed prompt surgical repair post-diagnosis.
- All patients achieved good functional outcomes.
Conclusions:
- A multidisciplinary team (surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, plastic surgeons) is crucial.
- Prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical intervention are essential.
- Proposed management protocol is safe and effective for complex degloving perineal injuries.
