Background:

The Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (KTAS) is crucial for prioritizing emergency patients.
Effective triage education is essential for emergency nurses to ensure patient safety and optimal resource allocation.
Existing educational methods may lack the engagement and accessibility needed for continuous skill development.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a mobile application, the Competency-Based Triage Education Application (CTEA), for KTAS-based triage education.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the CTEA on emergency nurses' triage competency and performance.
To assess the impact of the CTEA on reducing undertriage errors.

Main Methods:

A quasi-experimental pre-post study with a comparison group was conducted.
The intervention group (n=31) used the CTEA mobile application (lectures, text/video cases) for one week.
The comparison group (n=35) received traditional book-based learning covering similar content.

Main Results:

The intervention group showed significant improvements in triage competency (p=0.013) and performance (p=0.039).
The CTEA group demonstrated a significant reduction in undertriage errors compared to the comparison group (p=0.041).
The mobile application provided an effective platform for repeated and continuous triage education.

Conclusions:

The Competency-Based Triage Education Application (CTEA) is an effective tool for enhancing emergency nurses' triage skills.
CTEA can significantly improve triage accuracy and reduce critical errors in emergency departments.
Mobile applications offer a promising avenue for ongoing, accessible, and effective nursing education in emergency settings.
